Rasuliden
Het tijdperk van de Rasuliden wordt vaak beschouwd als een van de meest briljante in de geschiedenis van Jemen. Hoewel de geschiedenis van deze regio gewoonlijk wordt gekenmerkt door diepe politieke en religieuze verdeeldheid, zou de omvang van het grondgebied waarover de Rasuliden heersten, pas in de zeventiende eeuw (kortstondig) worden opgeheven.
De zuidkust van Arabië tot aan Dhofar werd onder losse controle gehouden. De invloed van de Rasuliden reikte tot Zafan bij Salalah in Oman, waar een zijtak van de familie een tijdlang regeerde.Terwijl Hijaz onder de Mamlukse sultans van Egypte viel, hadden de Rasuliden tijdelijk de controle over de heilige stad Mekka, waardoor hun eigen prestige werd verhoogd. De Rasulidische staat was relatief gecentraliseerd en had een uitgebreid bureaucratisch apparaat om toe te zien op de inning van belastingen en andere noden van de staat. In elke grotere stad werden twee koninklijke ambtenaren aangesteld, wali (of amir) en nasir (of zimam of mushidd) genaamd.
Vooral Aden was belangrijk als haven waar schepen tussen de Rode Zee en de Perzische Golf en de Indische Oceaan aanlegden. Textiel, parfum en specerijen kwamen uit India, Zuidoost-Azië en China, terwijl slaven, ivoor en peper uit Afrika werden aangevoerd.Tot de belangrijkere Jemenitische exportartikelen behoorden paarden en landbouwgewassen. Joodse kooplieden waren in de belangrijkste havens te vinden, evenals Indiërs, Afrikanen en Egyptenaren. In zijn reisverslag vermeldt Marco Polo de sultan van Aden (Jemen) aan het eind van de dertiende eeuw: “In zijn koninkrijk zijn er vele steden en kastelen, en het heeft het voordeel van een uitstekende haven, die wordt bezocht door schepen uit India die aankomen met specerijen en drugs… De sultan van Aden bezit immense schatten, voortkomende uit de imposts die hij legt, zowel op de koopwaar die uit Indië komt, als op die welke in zijn haven wordt verscheept als de terugkerende lading”.
Tussen 30 december 1418 en 27 januari 1419 bezocht de schatvloot van Ming China Jemen onder het bewind van Al Malik al Nasir. De Chinese gezant, vermoedelijk Admiraal Zheng He, werd vergezeld door de Jemenitische gezant Kadi Wazif al-Abdur Rahman bin-Zumeir die hem naar het Jemenitische hof begeleidde. De Chinezen brachten geschenken mee ter waarde van 20.000 miscals, waaronder dure parfums, geurig hout en Chinees aardewerk. De Jemenitische heerser stuurde in ruil luxegoederen gemaakt van koraal uit de haven van Ifranza, wilde runderen en ezels, tamme leeuwenwelpjes, en wilde en getrainde luipaarden. De Jemenitische gezant vergezelde de Chinezen met de geschenken naar de haven van Aden, waardoor de handel onder de façade van geschenkenruil in stand bleef.
Culturele verworvenheden
Verscheidene Rasulidische sultans waren cultureel vooraanstaand, het waren mannen van letteren die literatuur en zelfs verhandelingen schreven. Zo schreef al-Afdal Abbas (r. 1363-1377) een uitgebreid compendium met passages over zaken van praktisch nut, intellectuele interesse en vermaak, Fusul majmua fi’l-anwa’ wa ‘l-zuru’ wa ‘l-hisad. Zijn zoon al-Ashraf Isma’il (r. 1377-1401) schreef een algemene geschiedenis van Jemen. De meeste heersers bouwden moskeeën en madrassa’s en verfraaiden Ta’izz en andere steden met mooie gebouwen. Tot de bekendste monumenten behoren Jami al-Muzaffar uit de dertiende eeuw en Ashrafiyya uit de veertiende eeuw, beide in Ta’izz. Deze monumenten werden geïnspireerd door modellen uit plaatsen als Egypte en Syrië en braken met de oudere Jemenitische bouwstijl. Munten werden geslagen door alle sultans in de periode ca. 1236-1438. Er waren munthuizen in verschillende steden en de munten werden gekenmerkt door symbolen voor elke munt: vis voor Aden, vogel voor Zabid, zittende man voor Ta’izz, en leeuw voor al-Mahjam.
