Hoe wordt natuurlijk zeep gemaakt?
Beschrijving van het maken van zeep
Om natuurlijke zeep te kunnen maken heb je als basis een natuurlijke olie of vet nodig. Bijvoorbeeld olijfolie. Als je deze mengt met een loog en verwarmt dan ontstaat er een chemische reactie die als resultaat zeep oplevert. Een loog is een mengsel van natrium hydroxide en water. Natrium hydroxide is een alkali. Een hydroxide van een alkalimetaal. In dit geval Natrium maar het kan ook van kalium, rubidium, cesium, lithium of francium zijn. Een hydroxide is de stof die ontstaat als een metaal reageert met zuurstof. Metaaloxiden reageren met water tot specifieke nieuwe verbindingen. Daarom worden alkaliën gebruikt om zeep te maken. De alkali reageert met water. Dit geeft natronloog. Natronloog reageert met de olie of het vet en een chemisch proces (verzeping) wordt in gang gezet.
Dit chemische proces resulteert in een nieuwe vorm en samenstelling van het gebruikte basismateriaal. Dit noemen we dan zeep. In vroegere tijden werd potas gebruikt om loog te maken waarmee zeep gemaakt kon worden. In houtskool(as) zitten namelijk alkaliën.
In de islamitische wereld werd deze methode al in de 8e eeuw na Chr. gebruikt in de stad Aleppo. Zakariya’ Abu Bakr Al-Razi, een belangrijke naam in de chemie, heeft in de tiende eeuw na Chr. recepten opgeschreven om zeep te maken van olijfolie. Tijdens het vervaardigen van natuurlijke zeep kunnen etherische oliën worden toegevoegd vanwege hun geur of vanwege hun vermeende therapeutische werking. Soms worden ook kruiden of bloemen toegevoegd. Zo worden aan lavendelzeep droge lavendelbloempjes toegevoegd. Ook klei of natuursteen kan worden toegevoegd aan natuurlijke zepen tijdens het productieproces. Zo worden lavassteenkorrels toegevoegd aan natuurlijke zepen voor het verwijderen van eelt. Bij het toevoegen van etherische oliën is het goed rekening te houden met het type huid waar de natuurlijke zeep voor gemaakt wordt. Gevoelige huid verdraagt weinig tot geen etherische olie. Het geheim van het zeep maken zit hem in de juiste verhoudingen water, vet/olie, natrium hydroxide en de duur van het mengen van deze bestanddelen.
De chemische reactie die ontstaat verandert de bestandsdelen in een verdikte vloeibare massa. Deze wordt uitgegoten in mallen of op een geprepareerde vloer om af te koelen. Na enige tijd, vaak één dag, wordt de afgekoelde zeep uit de mallen geslagen of op de vloer geknipt en gemerkt. De zeepstukken worden vervolgens in rekken of in pyramide-achtige constructies opgestapeld. De zeep moet nu drogen. Afhankelijk van het toegepaste procédé kan dit variëren tussen de 3 maanden tot ruim één jaar. Het overtollige vocht is dan verdampt. Na dit bewerkelijke proces kan de zeep eindelijk gebruikt worden.
